The symposium was an opportunity for mayors
and other municipal elected officials to discover how communities
in the US, Europe, and beyond use bicycling to achieve a wide variety
of policy goals; how they have overcome technical and financial
challenges to safely accommodating bicycles; and how local leadership
is essential to realize the potential of bicycling.
More
than 50 invited participants, including more than a dozen Mayors
and local elected officials from the US, convened at the headquarters
of the World Bank. Delegates discussed the benefits of bicycle friendly
communities – led by a presentation from Enrique Penalosa, the former
Mayor of Bogota – and strategies to create greater political support
for the development of more BFCs.
The
capital cities of four European nations and the United States were
among the 20 communities who signed an "Action Plan for Bicycle
Friendly Communities" at the conclusion of an international
symposium, Thursday March 4, at the World Bank headquarters in Washington,
DC.
We welcome additional
signers to the Action Plan.
